The ICF is introducing overseas (non-Japanese) startups that we feel are worthy of recognition. These showcases focus on the ICF six fields of societal issues (Wellness, Water and Food, Energy and Environment, Mobility, Disaster Prevention and Infrastructure, and Education and Human Resource Development) and other examples of businesses that are solving a variety of societal issues.

2022

  • Alternative Meat (Plant-based and Lab-grown Meat)
    As meat consumption tends to be higher in high-income countries, the environmental, social, and animal welfare benefits of meat alternatives are gaining traction as a popular substitute. This article looks at Novameat (Spain), a plant-based meat startup, and Mirai Foods (Switzerland), a cultured meat startup.

  • Blockchain
    Blockchain facilitates the process of recording transactions and tracking assets, making businesses more reliable and efficient while also opening up new opportunities. This article looks at Debitum (Latvia), a financial blockchain startup, and BlockPharma (France), a medical blockchain startup.

  • Addiction Treatment
    Addiction is now being considered much more seriously as a chronic brain disorder and not simply a behavioral problem or the result of simply making bad choices. This article looks at ZPharm (Canada), Virtual Rehab (Estonia), and Nulife Virtual (USA), which leverage technology to treat addiction based on this new definition.

  • Encouraging Creative Works in Disenfranchised Areas
    It is difficult to make a living from art in the conventional social structure, and it is often even more difficult to freely engage in creative activities in economically disadvantaged areas. This article looks at BEAT Global and Culture Push (both based in the United States), which are working to encourage art in these areas.
