①Need to accelerate decarbonization in the supply side of energy
It is critical to develop innovative energy production and conversion technologies for stable energy supply and higher economic efficiency. There are high expectations for this field, ranging from the practical use of otherwise wasted heat and bioenergy, which is currently underway, to the realization of so-called dream technologies, such as artificial photosynthesis and fusion power generation.
②Addressing the large room for energy conservation and decarbonization on the demand side
In order to achieve significant decarbonization, it is necessary to replace carbon-based fuels with electricity on the energy demand side. Although it is said that Japan’s industrial sector boasts one of the highest energy consumption efficiency rates, there is room for further improvement in the civilian sector of households and businesses.
③Insufficient recycling and ineffective use of resources
Waste reduction has become a global issue, and the recycling of plastics has also attracted attention. Cooperation between manufacturers and recyclers is important for the cyclical use of resources.
④Intensifying environmental deterioration and pollution
90% of the world’s population lives under polluted air. Water pollution and deforestation are also severe problems.
⑤Loss of biodiversity
In recent years, biodiversity has been damaged by deforestation and invasion by non-native species. There are concerns that the loss of biodiversity could lead to a negative chain reaction of global warming, food shortages, and an increase in thr risk of infectious diseases.
